Export a 3D model from 2020 Design Flex.

2020 Design Flex already knows how to hand its model to another renderer: it is one Save As, in a format called COLLADA. Five minutes, no plugin, and the original project never leaves your machine. Here is the whole procedure, including the one mistake that quietly ruins exports.

Kitchen project prepared for export.
  1. 1Openthe project, in Flex
  2. 2New folderempty, one per export
  3. 3Save AsCOLLADA, into that folder
  4. 4Checkone .dae + the texture images
  5. 5Drag it inthe whole folder — nothing to zip
Five minutes, no plugin, and the .kit project never leaves your machine.

The five steps

  • 1. Open the project in 2020 Design Flex. Any version that offers COLLADA in its Save As list works — Design Flex and 2020 Design Live included.
  • 2. Make a new, empty folder. The export writes many files. Give it a folder of its own — one job folder per export keeps every texture with its model.
  • 3. Save As → COLLADA. In Flex, choose Save As and pick the COLLADA format, pointing it at the empty folder. 2020 writes the .dae file and every texture image beside it.
  • 4. Check the folder. You should see one .dae file and a crowd of images (the textures). If the folder holds only the .dae, the textures went somewhere else — export again into an empty folder.
  • 5. Drag the whole folder into RenderFactor. The folder uploads in one go — nothing to zip. The importer reads the .dae, finds every texture beside it, and reports anything unusual before you spend a render.

The mistake that turns kitchens grey

The .dae file is the geometry; the images beside it are every surface in the room. Move or upload the .dae alone and the model arrives intact but blank — every cabinet grey, every counter grey — because the textures were left behind. It is the single most common export problem, and the fix is always the same: keep the folder together. (If you already have the export as a zip, that works too — as long as the textures are inside it.)

What about the .kit file?

The .kit file is 2020’s own project format, and it stays yours: no renderer takes it directly, RenderFactor included. The COLLADA export is the door 2020 provides — it carries the geometry, placements and textures out, and it never writes anything back. What exactly survives that trip, mesh by mesh, is documented in what survives the export.

What to do with the export

Anything that reads COLLADA — which is the point of the format. Some designers carry it into a general-purpose 3D tool and rebuild materials and lighting by hand (what that route really involves); RenderFactor is the same pipeline as a finished product: drag the folder in, finish the scene in the browser, and render it in the cloud — then hand the client a live 3D link instead of an attachment.
